esearch
has shown that it is important to provide children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) visually supported materials
to help them better understand their environment and
the expectactions for their behavior.
Children with ASD respond positively to visual supports.
By showing them "social stories", children
can learn appropriate ways to interact in social situations.
The stories can be individualized to include specific
needs or they can teach everyday routines or schedules.
Visual
learning tools can be beneficial to teaching any child,
not just those with ASD. They promote independece by
showing expected behavior. If a child can see the desired
outcome of a particular situation, they can respond
accordingly.
